- VDMSound
VDMSound is an
open source (licensed under theGPL )emulator of legacysound card devices forMicrosoft Windows , designed to allowvideo game s and other applications written forMS-DOS to run on modernoperating system s. Its author is Vlad Romascanu.VDMSound emulates
Adlib andSound Blaster cards (standard, pro and 16),parallel port DAC, and anMPU 401 midi interface.Design
As opposed to
DOSBox , which emulates an entirex86 personal computer withDOS , VDMSound emulates only portions of the DOS environment and the sound hardware. This results in reduced system load and thus the games run faster than under DOSBox on the same hardware specifications, but at the same time VDMSound does not provide the same level of compatibility as DOSBox.History
The project was discontinued in mid-2002, when additional improvements in emulation were no longer possible due to limitations in the Windows kernel. The sound emulation code from VDMSound has since been integrated into DOSBox. [ [http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=12613 VOGONS :: View topic - Is the latest version of VDMSound 2.1.0? ] ]
Since VDMSound is not compatible with
Windows Vista , thus making the whole project obsolete, current version 2.1.0 beta is likely to be final version.References
