Donncha Ó hEallaithe

Donncha Ó hEallaithe, Irish language activist and academic, fl. 2000.

Ó hEallaithe was raised a native Irish speaker and has been active in promoting the language for several years. In 1986 he made a perilous voyage on a Galway hooker to the Faroes. While there he witnessed the natives television station Sjónvarp Felagíð í Havn (Tórshavn Television Association). On his return he informed the filimaker, Bob Quinn, about this initiative. This inspired Quinn and others to set up a similar transmitter on Cnoc Mordaun in 1987. This would lead to the creation of Teilifís na Gaeilge in 1996.

Ó hEallaithe is currently lecturer in math at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology.
