High school
Tate attended Cartersville High School in Cartersville, Georgia. He was drafted by the Padres third overall in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. Tate committed to play baseball and football at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but chose instead to sign with the Padres for a bonus of $6.7 million.[1]
Personal
Tate is the son of former NFL tailback Lars Tate.[2]
