Alsop was born in Duluth, Minnesota, and served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Minnesota in 1950 and 1952. Following graduation, he clerked for Justice Thomas Gallagher of the Minnesota Supreme Court.
