Brigade Major

Brigade Major

In the British Army, a Brigade Major is the Chief of Staff of a brigade or equivalent sized formation. Often they are actually of lieutenant-colonel rank but the appointment could be held by a staff trained officer of the rank of Captain on promotion from Lieutenant. The title is tending to obsolescence except in the Household Division. A Brigade Major is an officer appointed by the brigade commander, whatever his own actual rank may be, to help the command and control of the brigade. In 1913 Staff Captains of Artillery in the British Army were re-styled as Brigade Majors to bring them into line with Cavalry and Infantry practice.
