Plot

Vijay (Shatrughan Sinha) and Anand (Rajesh Khanna) are two friends who are brought up by their mom (Dina Pathak). Anand is an orphan who was adopted by the family as a child and he has never been given the impression that he was an outsider. Vikram and Anand are owner and manager respectively, of an advertising agency in Bombay. Anand has been raised by Vikram's family, and feels greatly indebted to them. Both work for the same organization & love the same woman, Asha (Jaya Pradha).

In the organisation, Sheela works as a deputy to Anand and she is in love with him but has never told him her feeling s for him. Anand is totally unaware of the this fact. Asha keeps making calls to Anand while he is busy working during office hours. Sheela develops the habit of over hearing conversations between the two real life lovers. At first she was not aware that her friend Asha is the lover of Anand and even after coming to know that Asha, with whom she stays in Bombay, is the girl who loves Anand, she still continues to harbour love for Anand. Meanwhile Vikram frequents a bus stop daily on his way to office in his car. There he sees Asha daily and instantly decides that he would propose to her. But he does not approach Asha and tell his feelings directly. But he keeps following her and tries to impress her a bit but she ignores him. Vikram discloses to Anand that he wants to marry a girl who he has seen many times standing in a bus stop waiting for a bus. Anand asks him her name but he refuses to disclose till the time both become lovers. Meanwhile Vikram's mom looks for suitable girl for their marriage and declares that she would search for two girls and marry both her sons together on the same day. But Asha has already given her heart to Anand.

Also in a function where Sheela goes as a guest, there she is insulted by another guest calling her a unlucky women. Sheela had a troubled past ie. just a day before her marriage was going to take place her would be husband died. This is the reason she left her village and started to stay in Bombay in Asha's house. After getting insulted in front of many people in that function, Sheela starts crying and shares her feelings with Asha. The next day as usual just about the time when Anand is supposed to leave for office sharp at nine in the morning, Anand makes call at Asha's house, but the call is picked up by Sheela and she sends sweet signals to Anand as if she is Asha. Anand is not aware during this particular conversation that he is getting those sweet signals from his deputy Sheela. But then in the end Sheela says it was a wrong number. In Sheela's mind there is a major confusion as to whether she should continue to love Anand in her dreams in spite of knowing it too well that Anand and Asha love each other since a very long time. Then the next day she goes for a film with the couple in love Asha and Anand. There while watching the film Sheela develops jealousy over the love affair and in the middle of the film goes away from the theatre. While crying and walking in the road, she meets Vikram. Vikram offers her a lift in his car and in the car she blurs out lots of things indicating that she is feeling very lonely in her life and that she has lost her loved one to some other girl. Then the next day, Sheela apologies to Vikram in the office for her misbehaviour with him the earlier day and asks for a 10 day leave citing personal reason.Sheela then decides to go to to her hometown near Nagpur so as to forget Anand and her obsession with him. But while Sheela gets ready to go for her hometown, even Asha joins her as she learns that Anand is on a business tour to Nagpur and she wants to avail of this opportunity to meet Anand more privately. Then one day when Sheela is alone in her own house, Anand comes there to meet Asha from Nagpur. It happens to be a very rainy day. By the time Anand reaches Sheela's home, it's night time and he learns that Asha has gone to attend some friend's wedding with Sheela's father. But as no train is available for going back to Nagpur, Sheela insists that Anand should leave the place only the next day. In the midnight, Anand starts feeling very cold due to change in weather and so starts drinking wine. Meanwhile after a few drinks he gets a feeling that the woman standing next to him is not Sheela but Asha. He touches Sheela believing her to be Asha but Sheela is pite of knowing that Anand is not in his senses due to consumption of alcohol, has sexual intercourse with him. Then in the morning Anand realises what has happened and then writes a letter to Sheela asking her to abort the child and keep the incident as a secret for life as he wants marry Asha only. While Sheela's is sleeping in her bed, Asha comes home and she catches hold of the letter meant for Sheela. Asha then becomes aware of what transpired between Sheela and Anand in her absence. Asha then decides that as she respects her friend ship with Sheela a lot so she would sacrifice her love for Sheela and make Anand marry Sheela.
