Richard Wertheim, known as Dick Wertheim, was an American tennis linesman who suffered a fatal injury on 10 September 1983 during a match at the 1983 US Open.[1]
He died from blunt cranial trauma as a result of his injury, after Stefan Edberg sent an errant serve directly into his groin, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement.[2] He was unconscious when he was removed to Flushing Hospital and Medical Center.
Wertheim died on September 15.[3] His family later sued the United States Tennis Association for $2.25 million.[4]
