Der kleine Vampir (1985) Country of origin Germany Der kleine Vampir (1985) is a German television series.
Der kleine Vampir is the title of a series of books that was created in 1979 by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg. Over 12 million of these children’s books have been sold and they were translated into more than 30 languages. The little vampire’s adventures were also published in the form of audio books, comics, movies and musicals. The basic idea of this history comes from 1976, when Sommer-Bodenburg wrote small stories about the adventures of the small vampire and a human boy.
The books are about the friendship between a human boy called Anton and the little vampire Rüdiger. Anton loves horror stories, especially the ones about vampires. That’s the reason for him and Rüdiger to become friends pretty quickly when Rüdiger visits him surprisingly. The problem is that Anton’s parents should not find out what Rüdiger really is
Little by little, Anton gets to know others of Rüdiger’s family members like his younger sister Anna and his older, moody brother Lumpi. Anna represents the main reason why Anton is not that interested in his class’ girls. His mother especially likes his class mate Tatjana, the girl that lives next door but Anton is only interested in Anna.
The friends do nightly “trips” with the help of a lend cape for vampires for Anton. These trips but also the problems that vampires are facing evoke tension. Rain (there are even rain capes made of rubber to brave that), garlic, moving with a coffin as well as the game of cat and mouse with Geiermeier the vampire hunter pose these problems.
Main characters
- Anton Bohnsack
Anton is 9 years old and visits the 3rd grade. He likes reading horror stories, especially vampire stories like those written by Sheridan Le Fanu or Hugh Walpole. But the acquaintance with vampires of course causes trouble with his parents. When they drag him to the psychologist, he is able to make them go to marriage counselling. Thanks to this counselling, Anton has a Rumania vacation later on. But in the end, Anton has to realize the danger of being friends with vampires when he gets attacked during a vampire party by Olga, a friend of Rüdiger.
- Rüdiger von Schlotterstein
Rüdiger turned into a vampire when he was 11. Though, most of the time, he’s only interested in himself and his own benefit he never abandons his friends. He shows the vampire’s world to Anton and meets him as often as possible. He’s in love with Olga von Seifenschwein but she doesn’t hear him and only imposes on his kindness. He has a lot of respect for his older brother Lumpi and tries to emulate him. There are typical siblings troubles between him and his sister Anna.
