Whitney Houston .ong Information
"Run to You" was written by Jud Friedman and Allan Rich. Originally intended to be a break-up song, the song was approved by the production and stars. However, a month later, the director of "The Bodyguard" (Mick Jackson) called, saying he liked the song so much, but he'd rather have it be a love song. The entire song was rewritten except for the title. The production and stars loved the new version as well, finally setting a song for the movie.
Chart Information
All of the previous releases from "The Bodyguard" had been successes, landing in the Top Five. "Run to You" was expected to keep this trend up, but ultimately peaked at #31 on the
Billboard Hot 100 . In the US, it spent a mere 6 weeks in the Top 40, five of which were spent stalled at the #31 peak, as airplay and singles sales topped out at #26 and #41 respectively. The single stalled at #41 on theHot 100 Singles Sales chart, most likely due to "The Bodyguard Soundtrack" already having been certified 8x platinum and nearing 9x platinum status quickly. As stated, however, the single was able to crack the Top 30 on theHot 100 Airplay chart. On other Billboard charts, the song was moderately well received. On the R&B chart, it reached a peak position of #31 (despite low peaks on the R&B Airplay (#48) and R&B Singles Sales (#41) charts). The song was able to crack the Top 10 on the Adult Contemporary, peaking at #10.
Internationally, the song was not received well, barely charting in any countries, except making a #15 peak in the UK and #72 in Australia.
Awards
"Run to You" was nominated for a 1993 Academy Award for Best Original Song, but did not win.
Music video
The video "Run to You" features scenes from "
The Bodyguard " (like all of Houston's videos from the soundtrack), intercut with Houston running on clouds towards her lover. Due to Houston's hectic schedule and the lesser success of the single, the video was eclipsed by more prominent ones such as "I Will Always Love You".Artists who have covered this song
