Denise Shull

Denise Shull (born September 17, 1959 in Akron, Ohio) is an American thought leader, motivational speaker, performance coach and author in the psychology of risk, uncertainty and human performance under pressure. She is noted for her expertise in the application of research findings from neuroeconomics, emotion neuroscience and behavioral finance emotional and behavioral finance. She is best known for her unconventional ideas about the positive usage of feelings and emotions in trading and investing decisions.

Denise Shull's research in the neurobiology of emotion underlies her hypotheses regarding the role of human feelings in the formation of financial market behavior. Her work began with her 1995 Master’s thesis at The University of Chicago where she theorized how the processes of neurological development could underlie the enactment of Freud’s theory of the Repetition Compulsion. An update to that paper ^[1] appeared in the Journal of Modern Psychoanalysis in 2003 and draws on Allan Schore’s work in infant neurodevelopment and Joseph LeDoux’s study in fear and implicit emotional memory. This second paper outlines the mechanisms of neurological development that likely lead to the phenomenon, identified by Shull, wherein market participants develop unconscious transference to the markets as authority figures.

Shull founded The ReThink Group parent of TraderPsyches and SportsPsyches in 2003 and is credited with the concepts of emotion analytics, emotional templates, emotional architectures, "fC" or feeling contexts and fractal psychology. Shull is also known for her Social Markets Hypothesis, published in the CME magazine "Probability versus Ambiguity: Perceiving and Predicting Markets."

She is currently under contract to McGraw-Hill to deliver the book MARKET MIND GAMES, a totally psychological take on financial markets, in 2011.
