Founder of ISTANBUL 74Years active 1997-present Demet Muftuoglu Eseli is an eminent Turkish creative and fashion figure who divides her time between New York and Istanbul. She is the founder of ISTANBUL 74 and also acts as the Art Director of Vakko, the leading fashion house in Turkey. She was born in 1974 and raised in Istanbul.
One of her remarkable works was the collaboration with Zac Posen, who fashioned his RTW collections for Vakko under the private label of Zac Posen @ Vakko. Apart from the launching event of this collaboration, she masterminded a Grand Classics ceremony hosted by the legendary cinematic force, Daniel Day-Lewis. In 2007, Muftuoglu helped oversee the organisation of the gala night of the Luxury Conference held in Istanbul hosted by Suzy Menkes.
Muftuoglu also creates the seasonal campaign shootings of Vakko, all photographed by the Turkish movie director Alphan Eseli. They have been working with some of the most respected models around the world for the last couple of seasons such as Gisele Bündchen, Jessica Stam, Erin Wasson, Heidi Mount, Sasha Pivovarova,Olivier Martinez and more. She commissioned Rex Architects in New York to create the new VAKKO HQ building which went on to win the Wallpaper Best Workspace of the Year in 2010.
In 2000, Muftuoglu conceptualised and developed the multi-label concept store V2K Designers which is a reflection of her lifestyle.
Demet Muftuoglu is the co-founder and the creative head of the ISTANCOOL - Istanbul International Festival of Culture- founded by Liberatum in partnership with Istanbul'74. Jefferson Hack of AnOther Magazine collaborates on this festival which features some of the world's most iconic creative minds and their Turkish counterparts.
In 2011, Muftuoglu and ISTANBUL'74 present an exhibition of work by Sandro Kopp in conjunction with the Istancool 2011 Festival. Also the Stephen Jones 'Accent of Fashion' MoMu Hats Retrospective at the Vakko Fashion Centre on the same year.
Now ISTANBUL 74 is proud to present new premises located in one of Istanbul’s oldest districts – Karakoy. On September, 15th 2011, Lehmann Maupin Gallery and ISTANBUL'74 celebrated and announced their new partnership for programming to nurture a cultural exchange between Istanbul and New York with an exhibition of Tracy Emin
On 15 September, 2011 Lehmann Maupin and Istanbul’74 partnered again to host Frieze Dinner in honour to Shirazeh Houshiary & Angel Otero in London.
