- Death of Jamison Thrun
-
Jamison Miles Lee Thrun (1999-2011)[1] was a sixth grade student who was killed in a vehicle accident in Fairbanks, Alaska by 68 year old Yiki Kim in August 2011.[2][3][4] The intersection at which the accident took place had previously been a site of concern.[5] The incident resulted in an outpouring of support for the family,[6] calls for reform and more vigorous policing of known trouble spots[7] and a spree of other awareness raising activism.[8][9]
The investigation was led by the Alaska State Troopers with assistance from the Alaska Bureau of Investigation, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Police and the Fairbanks Police Department.[10]
On September 2, 2011 a memorial walk attracted more than 200 attendees.[11] Donations to the family were collected beforehand.[12]
His funeral was held on Monday September 5 at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church and will be buried in the Birch Hill Cemetery.[13]
Kim, who was taking her grandchildren to school at the time,[14] failed field sobriety tests after the crash.[15] Kim may have been having a stroke at the time of the accident.[16] When she was first arrested she was charged with first degree assault and reckless driving, upon Thrun's death charges were upgraded to manslaughter.[17]
Sports games were dedicated in Thrun's honor after his death.[18]
