Career

Ward joined the Post Office as a telegram boy in 1976 after leaving school and quickly became an active union member. He became a member of the Tooting branch committee of the Union of Communication Workers in 1981, and was branch secretary in 1982. From 1982 to 1985 he was London South West branch secretary, then London regional secretary in 1985 and 1986. He later served as London Divisional representative (1996–2000), as a Postal Executive member (2000–2001) and in 2001 became National secretary for the Outdoor Department. He was elected as the CWU's deputy general secretary in June 2003. He also served as the CWU's representative on the Labour Party's National Executive Committee, but decided to step down from this role in 2007 because he believed it conflicted with the interests of union members.[1]

Personal life

Ward is married with four children. His hobbies include supporting Chelsea F.C. and playing a blues guitar.
