Dave McCann is a morning anchor for KLAS-TV in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he has been for the past 19 years. He is also the studio host for BYUtv's True Blue, is one of the hosts of the Countdown to Kickoff Pregame Show along with Alema Harrington and David Nixon,[1] and is the lead sports announcer for BYUtv's college football coverage with Blaine Fowler and Gary Sheide[2] and men's college basketball with Fowler and Steve Cleveland. McCann also calls occasional women's college basketball with Kristen Kozlowski and college baseball games with Sheide for BYUtv.[3] He has also worked with Andy Toolson for men's basketball games fom 2008-2010.
McCann is the third of 10 children in his family and is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a two-year mission for the church in San Antonio, Texas. Upon his return he enrolled at BYU where he earned a degree in broadcasting. He graduated from the University in 1991 and was hired by ABC's Good Morning America to be their first sports reporter. After serving a few years at ABC, McCann was hired by KLAS where he served as the sports anchor for 13 years.[3]
While in Las Vegas McCann was also granted additional duties, as the voice of UNLV's football radio play-by-play man for 14 seasons (1995–2009).[4] McCann would also call men's basketball TV home games for the Rebels on KUPN [5] and MWC broadcasts for Friday Night Football and the women's basketball tournament games for SportsWest Productions.[6]
As KLAS continued to rotate through anchors, McCann continued to remain a strong hold for the network. After 13 seasons as the sports anchor, McCann was offered the chance to be a co-anchor for "8 News Now This Morning" where he has been with Dayna Roselli for the past 6 seasons.[3]
In 2007 BYUtv contacted Dave McCann about serving as a broadcaster for the upcoming BYU men's basketball games in the Las Vegas Invitational. McCann would go on to call 3 games during the Las Vegas Invitational. In 2009 BYUtv once again contacted Dave McCann about doing college basketball games for the network during the upcoming Las Vegas Classic. McCann once again accepted, but this time he was hired to be the lead play-by-play man for all BYUtv Sports men's basketball games. His contract with the network began December 5, 2009. For most men's college basketball broadcasts in 2009 and 2010 BYUtv used a tandem of Dave McCann at play-by-play, Andy Toolson as the analyst, and Jarom Jordan as the sideline reporter, though Dave Bollwinkel would serve as the analyst with McCann for the 2009 Las Vegas Classic championship game. Beginning in 2011 Toolson and new analyst Steve Cleveland will share the analyst role for college basketball on a rotating basis while McCann remains the play-by-play man.
In the fall of 2010, BYUtv began looking for a new studio host for their True Blue sports magazine program. McCann was eventually hired to be the host.[7] He began running the show on August 25, 2010, replacing long time producer Toni Cook after she graduated BYU.[8] Despite becoming the leading sports man for BYUtv, McCann continues to operate on KLAS. McCann will fly to Salt Lake City for BYUtv games and to record shows, but when he isn't recording or broadcasting events for BYUtv he continues to be the co-host for "8 News Now This Morning."[3]
