Mixed martial arts career
Martinez went to Pima Community College with (future) fellow MMA fighters Jamie Varner, Jesse Forbes, Efrain Escudero, and Drew Fickett. They were the ones who got him into the sport.[2] In November 2008 he told MMAWeekly Radio that he felt there was not much for college wrestlers to do after he left college, which is what got him following up advice from friends to get into MMA.
His first fight was in July 2006, where he beat Greg Saenz (by split decision) in Rage in the Cage 84. His December 2007 TKO debut ended in a loss to Mark "The Machine" Hominick.
Martinez made his WEC debut at WEC 37 event, against Joseph Benavidez. Martinez commented on this fight that he has anticipated long to enter the WEC because he considers this to be a promotion that gives good treatment to lightweight classes.
