-
Daniel Suelo (aka Shellabarger) is a 50-year-old American man who stopped using money in the autumn of 2000, and forgoes conscious barter. He lives part time in a cave near Moab, Utah when he is not wandering the country.
Daniel Suelo gained notoriety in October 2009 when his profile appeared in the US men's style print magazine Details.[1] This story was picked up by websites such as The Guardian in the UK,[2] The Huffington Post.[3], and Matador Change.[4] He was also interviewed for the BBC in September 2009,[5] by The Denver Post[6] in November 2009, and the Brazilian INFO[7] in November 2009. His story has since been repeated by many websites and news agencies around the world. Daniel was the subject of a 2006 video profile entitled Moneyless in Moab [2006], by Gordon Stevenson[8] and a 2009 video profile entitled Zero Currency [2009], by Brad Barber[9] as well as being featured on KBYU's Beehive Stories [2010], also by Brad Barber.[10] His biography is currently being written for Riverhead/Penguin by Mark Sundeen, scheduled to be published in early 2012. Daniel states he is not accepting proceeds from the book.
Daniel is one of a small number of individuals who have notably lived without money in recent times. These also include Heidemarie Schwermer, Mark Boyle and Tomi Astikainen.[11][12][13] Daniel appeared as a guest writer on Mark Boyle's blog in January 2011.[14]
