Biography

Daniel Atzori is Senior Researcher at Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM)[2] and a consultant for Agenzia Giornalistica Italia (AGI). He holds a Bachelor’s degree cum laude in History and a Master’s degree cum laude in Economic History from the Università degli Studi of Milan.

Writings

His first book, "Fede e mercato: verso una via islamica al capitalismo?"[3] (which translates as "Faith and market: towards an Islamic way to capitalism?"), was published in 2010. The book explores the interactions between Islam and global economy, examining in particular the moral economy of Islam, the birth of Islamic banks and the development of an Islamist middle class. Atzori focuses on the interdependence between economy and culture, analysing how the process of globalisation influences contemporary Islamic societies. According to him, the relationships between economic and religious practices should be conceptualised in dialectical terms. The dynamic encounter between economy and Islam produces new and original cultural products, such as Islamic finance, Islamic pop music and Islamic fashion.[4]

Daniele Atzori has also published an essay entitled "I Fratelli musulmani in Giordania" (The Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan) in a book edited by Massimo Campanini and Karim Mezran in which he analysed Islamic movements according to Gramsci's theory of hegemony.[5][6]

Research Areas

Atzori’s main areas of research and publication are Middle Eastern political economy,[7] Islamic finance[8] and Islamist radical movements.[9][10][11] He has exposed his Gramscian interpretation of Islamic movements in several international academic conferences, such as the Cambridge Symposium for Middle Eastern Studies,[12] Brismes Conferences in Manchester and Exeter,[13] Asmea in Washington DC.[14]
