[2] He also lead the effort against offshore oil drilling, including passage of 26 local ordinances in California counties and cities limiting development of onshore facilities for offshore drilling.[3][4] Mr. Haifley writes a newspaper column for the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper called "Our Ocean Backyard". In August 2011 he was given the Ocean Hero award by Save Our Shores. [5]
As Executive Director of O'Neill Sea Odyssey he has argued O'Neill Sea Odyssey's position that ocean concepts should be adopted in formal education standards and made more widely available to youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.[6]
