After playing two years at
North Carolina State University , Josh Powell was not selected in the2005 NBA Draft , but signed afree agent contract with theDallas Mavericks . While playing at NC State Powell averaged 12.4 ppg and 5.2 rpg in his sophomore year (2002-2003). After college, he played in the European leagues before declaring for the NBA Draft in 2005 where he went undrafted. However, he worked out for numerous teams and was eventually signed by the Mavericks who were looking for a power forward to develop behind starDirk Nowitzki .NBA career
At the beginning of the 2005-2006 season, Powell was in the D-League and put up solid numbers until he was called up to the
NBA , where he played only in "garbage time", when the game had already been practically decided. But, after injuries to startingsmall forward Josh Howard and backup power forwardKeith Van Horn , he began get more time when Nowitzki was in need of rest. He was traded onJuly 23 ,2006 , along withDarrell Armstrong andRawle Marshall to theIndiana Pacers in exchange for Anthony Johnson He had a guaranteed contract for the 2006-2007 season with the Pacers.On
January 17 ,2007 , Powell was dealt to theGolden State Warriors along with teammatesStephen Jackson ,Sarunas Jasikevicius , andAl Harrington forTroy Murphy ,Mike Dunleavy, Jr. ,Ike Diogu , andKeith McLeod .
