- Schauinsland
Schauinsland (literally "look into the country"; near
Freiburg ,Germany ), is a mountain in theBlack Forest with an elevation of 1,284 m (3281 ft) abovesea level .The area is good for a number of outdoor adventurous activities including
hiking ,skiing andmountain biking . There is also a solar observatory nearby [http://www.kis.uni-freiburg.de/fuehr2005_e.html] , aGlobal Atmosphere Watch monitoring station, and the interestingEugen-Keidel Tower . Especially in autumn, duringtemperature inversion , there is a nice view from the Schauinsland to theVosges mountains . Under appropriate weather conditions there is an excellent view of a large part of theSwiss Alps .The 12 km (7.5
mile ) long, twisty road leading up the mountain was used forhillclimbing races. In some years, it also hosted theGroßer Bergpreis von Deutschland , like onSeptember 27 1936, won byBernd Rosemeyer .Mining
For over 700 years lead, silver and zinc was mined in the area. The production was closed in 1954.
