createurope:THE FASHION DESIGN AWARD is a project of the Goethe-Institut Berlin. It started 2008 in cooperation with the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) as a competition for young European designers and fashion design students. This year participants from the Middle East and North Africa are also invited to enter createurope. The winners receive scholarships, further training in design, marketing and sales or internships with renowned fashion establishments.
A European jury made up of experts from the arts and fashion scene select up to 30 finalists from all the participating countries. The finalists are invited to Berlin for the final event in late October to present their collections at a big fashion show and final gala in Berlin. On this evening, a second prominent jury decides on the winners in the four categories: Best Upcoming Designer Award, Best Avant-Garde Award, Best Student Award and Audience Award. The patron of the competition is Dirk Schönberger, creative director of Joop!. The trophies were designed by British sculptor Tony Cragg.
