History

Crabby Joe’s Tab & Grill opened its first location in Sarnia in 1996 and has 36 locations across Ontario as of 2011.[2].

Franchise

There are 36 store locations in southern Ontario and currently expanding in: Cambridge, Essex, Exeter and Pickering [1]. Each Franchise owner is required to complete an 8 week pre-opening training. Also, There are support personnel that visit the owners restaurant on a regular basis for 3 to 4 weeks from when the restaurant has been opened. Following this, the owner will gain from continuing visits from the District Managers [4]. The cost of owning a franchise is $35,000 which is paid once the singing of the Franchise Agreement is completed for the continuous use of the Crabby Joe’s name, trademarks, and the advertising material [5]. The royalty Fee is 5% of the total sales which is characterized under the Franchise Agreement and is paid on a weekly basis to the Obsidian Group Inc [6]. The Marketing Fee is 2% of total sales which is defined in the Franchise Agreement and is paid weekly to Obsidian Group Inc. These fees are kept in a “Crabby Joe’s Marketing Account” and are used for system advertising and promotion of the Crabby Joe’s system as established by the Franchisor [7]. The franchise regulations prevent Obsidian Group Inc. from disclosing return of investment made. What can be made is totally based on various variables including: sales mix, competition in the area, operational costs, time of year and more [8].
