Lackawanna County Commissioner
Corey O'Brien teamed up with Democratic County Commissioner Mike Washo for the 2007 election in Lackawanna County. They were going up against the two majority commissioners, Republicans A.J. Munchak and Robert Cordaro. In November, the Washo-O'Brien ticket defeated the Republican ticket. In 2008, Mike Washo and Corey O'Brien were sworn in as the majority board members. A.J. Munchak remained on the board. Robert Cordaro came in fourth place, the cut-off point for being on the board of commissioners. [3]
2010 bid for U.S. Congress
He challenged incumbent U.S. Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski in the Democratic primary in 2010. He was defeated by the 13-term U.S. Congressman on Tuesday, May, 18, 2010. O'Brien received 33.9% of the vote. Another candidate, Brian Kelly, received 16.8% of the vote. Representative Paul Kanjorski won with 49.3% of the primary vote and was re-nominated to face the Republican challenger, Lou Barletta, in the November 2010 general election. [2] In the 2010 midterm election, Paul Kanjorski lost in the race to the Republican.
In 2011, O'Brien selected Jeanette Mariani, the Mayor of Blakely, Pennsylvania, as his new running mate after fellow majority commissioner Michael Washo announced his retirement. In the Democratic primary, O'Brien narrowly defeated former county chief of staff Elizabeth Randol to claim a second-place finish and proceed to the general election on a ticket with former state representative Jim Wansacz. Mariani finished a distant fifth.
