Qualified teams
The following associations have adopted new qualification methods for this tournament:
- Argentina: The aggregate table of the 2011 Clausura and the 2011 Apertura results will be used to determine the Copa Sudamericana qualifiers (same as the table used to determine the 2012 Copa Libertadores qualifiers). If a team already qualifies for the 2012 Copa Libertadores, they will not play in the 2012 Copa Sudamericana. However, any team eliminated from the First Stage of the 2012 Copa Libertadores will automatically qualify for the 2012 Copa Sudamericana (Argentina 1 or Argentina 2 berth). The 2011–12 Copa Argentina champion will also automatically qualify for the 2012 Copa Sudamericana (Argentina 6 berth) if they have not already qualified.[1]
- Bolivia: The league will change their calendar to European calendar (like Argentina, Uruguay and Venezuela) starting from 2011–12. The 2011 Adecuación will be a single-stage season, and the third-placed team will earn the Bolivia 1 berth.[2] The 2011 Apertura runner-up and third-placed team will earn the Bolivia 2 and Bolivia 3 berths respectively.[3]
- Chile: The league will return to the Apertura and Clausura format for the 2011 season, after using a single-season format for 2010 due to the 2010 Chile earthquake. The 2011 Clausura and 2012 Apertura classification phase winners will earn the Chile 2 and Chile 3 berths respectively.[4]
- Peru: The league will use a home-and-away round-robin format, followed by the championship play-off between the top two teams, for the 2011 season. The fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-placed teams (decided by league table) will earn the Peru 1, Peru 2, and Peru 3 berths respectively.[5]
