The congregation of France is a French religious order that observes the rule of St. Augustine. Its members are Génovéfains (whose name comes from Genevieve); they wear a white dress and a ratchet and a black cloak outside the convent. It was founded by Cardinal de La Rochefoucauld, abbot of the Sainte-Genevieve de Paris. It aimed to restore the Augustinian abbey's rigorous observance promoted by the Church following the Council of Trent.
In the eighteenth century the order had 107 monasteries and over 1300 nuns who care primarily hospitals and almshouses.
