The Conference for Advanced Life Underwriting (CALU) is a Canadian not-for-profit association which represents the interests of members of The Financial Advisors Association of Canada (TFAAC), also known as Advocis and their clients to members of the Canadian Parliament and officials of Canadian federal government departments, in particular, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the Department of Finance Canada (Finance). While CALU's mandate is specific to “advanced life underwriting” the term is defined in CALU's by-laws as inclusive of the range of advisory and marketing activities relating to estate planning, corporate-owned life insurance, wealth creation and management, employee benefits as well as financial and retirement planning.

Membership

CALU's representations draw on two major elements of expertise provided by its membership - Active Members are licensed financial services advisors and intermediaries while Associate Members are generally professionals from accounting, legal or actuarial backgrounds involved in product design and development who provide technical counsel as to the applications of financial products and services. CALU consults on policy positions and offers recommendations concerning various forms of legislation pertaining, generally, to Canada's Income Tax Act, and to legislative proposals emanating through or from the CRA and Finance. By virtue of its relationship with TFAAC Advocis, CALU generally defers to this organization in matters of provincial jurisdiction such as licensing and regulatory issues.

Annual Meeting

The CALU Annual Meeting is held each May in Ottawa. Particular emphasis is placed on legislative and public policy issues, with Members of Parliament, Senators, Cabinet Ministers and department officials invited to speak on issues of current importance. Main platform and workshop sessions provide updates in the application of financial products and services to such needs as Critical Illness & Long Term Care, Risk Management, Investment Strategies, Life Insurance, Employee Benefits, Executive Compensation, Retirement Planning, Charitable Giving, Succession Planning, Business Continuity, Estate Planning and Personal Financial Planning.

Governance

CALU was formed by official resolution of the Life Underwriters Association of Canada (the former name of The Financial Advisors Association of Canada (Advocis) in January 1991. The organization is patterned after, and shares many of the same goals as, the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU) in the United States.
