Concordia High School (Edmonton)

Concordia High School (Edmonton)

Established 1921. The very first class of students, eighth grade boys. Concordia High School (CHS), originally named, Concordia College and subsequently, Concordia College High School until 1997. The university college that exists on the Highlands campus grew out of the small high school. It was created, nurtured and built slowly since the 1930s. The original purpose of the school was to prepare young men to attend the Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri.

Once the boys were ordained they would return to the Canadian Prairies to open up new Lutheran churches. Eventually in the 1940s the school became co-ed and became an academic prep school.

In 1987 Concordia University College of Alberta was granted degree granting status. The 23-year history of the university college (CUCA) is largely owed to the small academic high school that added junior college courses to the high school program until it grew into a full fledged university college.

Most often students received their high school diploma and took university courses at Concordia until they were accepted at the University of Alberta. In 2000 it was decided that a process to separate the high school (university prep) program from the university program began. Concordia High School was incorporated as a separate entity and is no longer under the governance of CUCA. The high school has its own board of governors.

In 1997 the building at 112 ave & 73 street in Edmonton opened and housed the high school program for fourteen years. This building sits at the very north end of campus. Ironically the CUCA administration is now housed in the original building erected for the high school program in 1926 and faces south toward Ada Blvd.

Concordia High School is moving to 830 Saddleback Road (the former Taylor University campus) in Edmonton, Alberta. This move will occur during the summer of 2011. The former Taylor campus is larger and will allow Concordia to expand its programs and size. CHS remain aj ewel in the Alberta educational crown. As a faith-based, both day and boarding prep school with international students located on a university campus Concordia has no directly comparable competitors.
