Coloured Persons Representative Council Amendment Act, 1968

Coloured Persons Representative Council Amendment Act, 1968

The Coloured Persons Representative Council Amendment Act was adapted by the South African House of Assembly in 1968, by the B J Vorster government. It abolished all indirect representation of Coloured persons in parliament, with the four white MPs elected by Cape Coloured voters losing their seats upon expiration in 1970, and instead created a virtually powerless Coloured Persons' Representative Council. The CPRC was to consist only of Coloureds representing mature Coloured voters (turnout was generally low), with a minor number appointed by the all-white South African government. Legislation enacted by the CPRC was only to affect Coloured people, a prelude to the Tricameral Parliament created by the Republic of South Africa Constitution Act of 1983.

Subsequent to this legislation, this Act, the first all-white general election was held, resulting in a landslide for the National Party.
