Sir Colman Maurice Treacy, known as Mr. Justice Treacy (born 28 July 1949) is a British High Court Judge.
He attended Stonyhurst College and Jesus College, Cambridge. In 1971 he was called to the Bar, Middle Temple, and appointed as QC in 1990.
He presided at the trial of Faryadi Sarwar Zardad and Colin Gunn. Gunn, a British mobster, received a 35 year sentence for conspiracy to murder. As Treacy pronounced sentence, Gunn told him to "Die of AIDS".[1]
Treacy also presided at the trial of two suspected Islamic terrorists "accused of plotting to cause 'terrorist' explosions in the UK". One of the two, Faisal Mostafa, was acquitted at this trial, while Moinul Abedin was convicted.[2]
In 2010, he heard the case of the ₤1.7 million Heathrow warehouse robbery, involving four defendants - Twomey, Blake, Hibberd and Cameron - which was the first criminal trial in more than 300 years in Crown Court to be heard without a jury.[3] He convicted all four men on 31 March 2010.[4] This ended the 350 year precedent of all serious criminal charges in England and Wales being tried by judge and jury. The trial reportedly cost ₤25,000,000.[5]
