The family business began at the small house of Robert Coats on Parkside Avenue in 1952 in Detroit, Michigan and operated at this location for 25 years. In 1950 Robert's son, Leonard, joined the business and moved it to the small community of Waterford, Michigan. It was here he built a facility to accommodate the business on the first floor and the family's home on the second floor. Until Robert's death in 1971, he and his wife lived in a second-floor apartment at that location. Leonard and his wife, Mabel, also lived in a second-floor apartment; Mabel lived at this location until her death in 2004. Coats Funeral Home Waterford is still in operation today.
The third generation of the Coats family, Bob Coats, the son of Leonard, took over management of the family business and upon retiring in 2000, Bob passed this responsibility to his daughters, Heather and Heidi Coats. In 2008 Coats Funeral Home opened a second location in Ortonville, Mich. and in 2010, a third location was opened in Clarkston, Mich.
Coats Funeral Home assists in scheduling burial and military honors in association with Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. The business also often hosts veteran activities at this location like the Great Lakes National Cemetery Tour in Holly, Michigan[1] to celebrate special seniors in the area.
The current director of Coats Funeral Home, Heater M. Coats, was appointed as Trustee to the Waterford Township Board of Trustees at the February 8, 2010 Township Board Meeting after the death of Trustee Judge Kenneth H. Hempstead. She will serve on the Board until November 2, 2010[2] at this time she will vacate the position and a new trustee will be voted into position.[3]
