Sir Barry Close, 1st Baronet

Sir Barry Close, 1st Baronet

Sir Barry Close, 1st Baronet (1756 – 18 April 1813) was an officer in the East India Company. As Major General with the Army in India, he served at Tellicherry and at the Siege of Seringapatnam against Tipu Sultan. His ability to negotiate with the King of Mysore led to his appointment as the Resident in the state of Mysore. He later became Resident at Poona. He then sought permission to resign and go back to England.[1] In 1812 he was created a Baronet, of Mysore, a title which became extinct on his death the following year. The town of Closepet near Mysore was named after him.
