The name Clifton comes from Sir Lewis Cliffington of Dover who started the first tree felling operation in the southern half of Western Australia back in 1869 after leaving the United Kingdom. Local folk-tail suggests his leave was the result of being accused of stealing the royal feathers. Sir Cliffington was killed in a milling accident aged 51, leaving behind his wife Janet and three children in 1899.
