Introduction

The name Clifton comes from Sir Lewis Cliffington of Dover who started the first tree felling operation in the southern half of Western Australia back in 1869 after leaving the United Kingdom. Local folk-tail suggests his leave was the result of being accused of stealing the royal feathers. Sir Cliffington was killed in a milling accident aged 51, leaving behind his wife Janet and three children in 1899.

Recent events

Despite the beauty and vibrant culture in Clifton Hills. It has recently had its beauty disrupted by bush fires as the result of a police officer using a cutting tool during a complete fire ban on the Brookton Highway in early 2011. The event shook the world, as many hoped their tourist destination would not be affected. Over sixty houses were damaged and many in black-out as the fire was fought by local authorities. There was only one injury as a result of a traffic accident. The Australian Prime minister Julia Gillard met with the residents of Cliffton Hills in early April 2011 to pledge that money from the flood levy would also be shared with those affected by the devastation of the bushfires.

Commerce

Clifton Hills has a vibrant shopping precinct known as "The Local Deli". Residents can purchase fresh produce, literature, beverages and enjoy the company of family and friends while viewing the scenic "Fryer Park" on the valley-side below.
