Classic alternative is a radio format focusing on alternative music from the late 1970s to early 1990s, with particular focus on the early days of MTV.

Typical Genres

• new wave- a major part of the category, especially early bands like The Cars and Talking Heads
• Power pop- bands like The Knack and The Romantics are often included
• College rock- the early works of REM and They Might Be Giants occasionally show up on classic alternative stations, particularly those of REM
• Early post punk- rare on many classic alternative stations, but usually included for variety
• grunge- sometimes included for variety, but more often found on modern rock stations
• Synthpop- songs like I Ran So Far Away and Take On Me are essential on classic alternative stations
