EFQM History
In the 1950’s
Quality Assurance was gaining ground in Europe. It was a well-developed discipline, practised by many companies in a variety of formats. However, it was believed that an actual European focus onTotal Quality Management (TQM) was missing in which the best ideas from around the world could be brought together. For that reason, 14 CEOs of prominent European businesses created the European Foundation for Quality Management, later referred to as EFQM. On October 19, 1989, the terms of reference of EFQM were established. Mr. Cornelius van der Klugt, then CEO ofPhilips , was confirmed as the first President of the EFQM."Below, an overview of all the business leaders and companies that formed EFQM:"
Today, over 700 organisations comprise the EFQM Network, through which, over 20 000 individuals are closely linked to EFQM’s activities.
Knowledge
"Excellence is not a theory; it relates to the tangible achievements of an organisation in what it does, how it does it, the results it gets and the confidence that these results will be sustained in the future."
The
EFQM Excellence Model embeds these principles of Excellence in a framework that helps organisations assess their capabilities and strengths in order to achieve their particular goals. The model was launched in 1991 and is based on the Fundamental Concepts of Excellence.Today, the EFQM Excellence Model is one of the most widely used organisational, non-prescriptive management framework in Europe, used by at least 30,000 organisations in more than 25 European countries and, increasingly, outside Europe.
Next to the development of the Excellence Model, EFQM has also written books, such as "Above the Clouds".
Activities
So as to assist companies in achieving excellence, EFQM developed several training and leadership development programmes. By far the most popular EFQM course is the EFQM European Assessor Training, which gives you the skills and knowlegde needed to effectively assess an organisation. Moreover, passing this course enables you to qualify yourself as an EFQM Excellence Assessor.
In order to deliver these courses, EFQM cooperates with a number of external consultants. The EFQM Faculty is represented by:
- Laurie Bradley from TQMI Ltd
- Geoff Carter from PACEPerformance Ltd
