History
In 1964 the Navarran pharmacist Ezequiel Lorca founded Infarco, the mother company of Cinfa. 4 years later, in 1969 the laboratory was launched.
Initially based at a factory in Berrioplano (Navarra), in 1981 Cinfa moved to a new location with greater production capability in Huarte, also in Navarra.
In 1994, Cinfa opted for generic medicines, which at that time were just beginning to take off in Spain. Since then the growth of the laboratory in this area has been exponential, and today practically one in every four generic medicines available in Spanish households is made by Cinfa.
In 2006, Cinfa became the leading Spanish laboratory in number of units of medicines distributed through pharmacies. Two years later, in 2008, Cinfa’s second factory in Olloki (Navarra)started production. It is a complex dedicated to the production of highly specialized generic medicines used in cancer treatments and for transplants.
In 2010, Cinfa reached sales of 300 million units of generic medicines and created a new line of dermopharmaceutical products under the brand name Be+.
Areas of Business
Cinfa’s portfolio has more than 750 products distributed over four areas:
Generic Medicines
Cinfa is the leading laboratory in the Spanish market in terms of units of generic medicines sold. Its vademecum covers 90,3% of the active principles used commercially in generic medicines on a national scale, with drugs for all types of treatment.
OTC products
OTC (Over the Counter) products are those that can be sold solely on the advice of the pharmacist or healthcare products without the need for a doctor’s prescription. In this field, Cinfa is the second Spanish laboratory in the Spanish market, with leading brands such as Cintafós, Respibién and Pharmagrip among others.
Orthopaedic products
Under the brand name Farmalastic, Cinfa sells orthopaedic articles through pharmacy retail outlets. These products are for sporting activities as well as treatment for circulatory and skeletal-muscular conditions.
Dermopharmaceutical treatments
In 2010 Cinfa entered the world of Dermopharmacy or Dermocosmetics with the new Be+ range. Under this brand the company markets skin-care products. These are in five main groups: moisturizers, anti-ageing products, products for men, products for skins prone to acne and products for sensitive or intolerant skins.
Team of Professionals
Cinfa employs more than 750 people. 250 of whom form the commercial network of the laboratory sales agents that supply Spanish pharmacies.
At the same time the R&D&i department of Cinfa, in which the laboratory invests an average of 10 million euros a year, is made up of a team of 45 professionals: doctors and graduates in pharmacy, chemistry, medicine and biology. Simultaneously Cinfa manages development contracts with 37 national and foreign universities and centres of research.
Production Plants
Cinfa has two industrial plants for the manufacture of its own products in the Navarran towns of Huarte and Olloki.
The former has a surface area of 17,000m2 and is where the majority of Cinfa products are made.
The latter is built on a plot of 48,000m2 and consists of an office building, an automated storage facility, a cutting-edge laboratory and a factory for producing oral solids used in the confection of highly specialized generic medicines.
Corporate Social Responsibility
Amongst the various social causes supported by Cinfa, one of the most important is Farmaceuticos mundi, an NGO to which Cinfa contributes annually with cash and medicines for its Emergency and Humanitarian Fund. Cinfa also has an agreement with Tasubinsa, a Navarran company dedicated to the social and occupational integration of people with mental disabilities.
With regards to the environment, the Cinfa office building in Olloki has the Maximum Energy Efficiency certificate from the Government of Navarra. Built following ecological criteria, it includes passive solar devices with ample open spaces to maximize the use of natural light. In this way, it manages to save approximately 100 tons of CO2 a year.
