Christopher McDermott (born June 7, 1989) is a British Handball player. He currently plays for Afturelding of the Icelandic N1 League. Past clubs include R.D. Slovan of Slovenia, Danish Liga side Aarhus G.F. and German Bundasliga side TUSEM Essen.Bio
Christopher began his handball career at the age of 10 playing for Wirral H.C. mini handball team. At the age of 15 he was selected to first the English youth national team in Malta. From there he was selected in 2006 to be a part of the British Handball team, who following an allocation of funding, were moving the performance headquarters to Idraetshojskolen i Arhus.
Christopher enjoyed 4 successful years in Denmark playing for several lower league clubs in his time there. Mid way through his time in Denmark Christopher was selected, along with 5 other British handball players to join struggling Budasliga Liga side TUSEM Essen. The experience gained playing at such a high level proved invaluable as on his return to Denmark, he signed for Danish Liga side Aarhus G.F. The season of 09/10 wasn't the most successful for Christopher. Affected by injury and struggling to break into the team meant that with a few games left in the season he was told he should start looking for another club. Despite setbacks at club level Christopher continued to thrive on the international scene. A busy 2010 schedule meant that at only 21 Christopher, along with national team mate Sebastian Prieto, became the first G.B to be capped 25 times for the senior squad.
For the 2010/11 season, Christopher joined R.D. Slovan of the top Slovenian league. It was a season of ups and downs despite and enjoying some on court successes the clubs financial troubles led to them being relegated at the end of the season. The summer of 2011 was a busy one for the British Handball team seeing them play Italy and Turkey, followed by a series in both Turkey and Brazil. Throughout this period he played as the squads first choice line player, this was the first time since he entered the national team that he had been in such a position.
With the 2011/2012 season under way, Christopher has joined Afturelding in Iceland, along with national team mate Mark Hawkins. He did however miss the start of the season due to a hand injury which required surgery.
