João Paulo Cunha

João Paulo Cunha is a deputy of the Brazilian Workers Party from São Paulo and was elected president of the House of Representatives in 2003. He fought but failed to achieve a second term in this position, which shifted to Severino Cavalcanti in February 2005.

He became involved in the major mensalão scandal when a bank withdrawal in the name of his wife Márcia Regina Milanésio Cunha was discovered in the accounts of the agencies of Marcos Valério, accused of playing a central role in the scheme. One of these agencies also worked on his campaign for the presidency of the Congressional body.

Data indicate that João Paulo was victim of a scaffolding of the Brazilian media, considered partial and highly influential in the national politics. Great nets of communication of that country had finished demoralized this episode after, when they had tried to occult the defense of the defendant, and to divulge facts not proven, that later proved to be lying.
