Arastu Yar Jung

Nawab Arastu Yar Jung (June 10, 1858 - March 25, 1940) was born as Abdul Husain in Hyderabad, India. Later, he became the First Surgeon to Fath Jang Mahbub Ali Khan Asif Jah VI, the Sixth Nizam of Hyderabad. The Nizam was so pleased with the services of Dr. Abdul Husain, he gave him the title of "Janab Arastu Yar Jung". Since then, most of his descendants have used the name "Arastu" as their last name. The entitlement was received as a gift in the royal court for the extraordinary service Abdul Husain had provided to the Nizam and the people of Hyderabad. During his career, Arastu Yar Jung also served as the Head of Surgery at the Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad.

Contributions

As a member of the Bohra muslim jamaat, Arastu Yar Jung was an active contributor to the community. Among other things, he is known for having financed and surveyed the construction of a masjid in the Hyderabadi neighborhood of Husaini Alam. Completed in 1913, this masjid is still in use today. Because of his dedicated service to the community and vast religious knowledge, Arastu Yar Jung received the honorable title of "Sheikh" from the Bohra jamaat.

After sending some of his children and grandchildren abroad to study at various institutions including the University of London and Cambridge University, many family members established themselves in Pakistan, United States, Canada, India, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and in the UK, where they have remained for more than 3 generations.
