Cherokee Nation Foundation

The Cherokee Nation Foundation (Cherokee language: ᏣᎳᎩ ᎠᏰᎵᎯ ᎦᎫᏍᏓᎥ) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit incorporated under the Cherokee Nation. It is the first 501(c)3 to be incorporated under the Cherokee Nation and not the state of Oklahoma. The mission is to provide higher educational opportunities to the Cherokee people and to help revitalize the Cherokee language. The Foundation is funded by private donors and offers services ranging from university scholarships to Cherokee language text books.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors serve a four year term and are appointed by the Principal Chief of the Cherokee. The Board of Directors is 100% Native American and is the only volunteer board under the Cherokee Nation business structure.

Activities

The Foundation is the first organization to publish textbooks in the Cherokee language and provides services to Northeastern State University and the Cherokee Nation Immersion School.[1]

In 2011 the Foundation established a $1 million dollar endowment at Oklahoma State University. It was the first gift of its kind from a Native American tribe. The endowment is open to all Cherokee Nation citizens.[2][3]

The Cherokee Nation Foundation is located in the capital of the Cherokee Nation at Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
