Chernushka Nunatak

Chernushka Nunatak

Chernushka Nunatak is a nunatak, 1,640 metres (5,380 ft) high, lying 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Sandseten Mountain on the west side of the Westliche Petermann Range in the Wohlthat Mountains. It was discovered and plotted from air photos by the Third German Antarctic Expedition, 1938–39. It was mapped from air photos and surveys by the Sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition, 1956–60, and remapped by the Soviet Antarctic Expedition, 1960–61. It was named by the USSR as a token of the Soviet scientists' achievements in the study of space, by commemorating Chernushka, a dog that was sent into space and safely returned to earth.[1]
