Checkmat

Checkmat

Checkmat-sometimes referred to as Check-Mat or Team Checkmat- is a leading international Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu association and team. It was founded in 2002 by the legendery Leo Vieira [1] who leads Checkmat with his brothers Ricardo Vieira [2] and Leandro Vieira. Checkmat currently has gyms and academies or affiliate gyms and academies around the world including Sao Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, Stockholm, California, Kuala Lumpur[3], Singapore[4], Paraguay, Reunion Island, Spain, the United Kingdom etc.

The name "Checkmat" is derived from the chess term "Checkmate" and the word "mat", being the surface on which Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is usually practised. The Vieira brothers saw similarities in the strategic and tactical nature of both chess and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu [5].

Team Checkmat are the 2008 and 2009 No-Gi World Champions [6]. Team Checkmat also came in first for the Brazilian Nationals (No-Gi) 2010 [7] and Brazilian Nationals (Gi) 2010. [8]

The Fightzone or Fight Zone academies, such as Fightzone Malaysia and Fight Zone USA, also form part of the worldwide Checkmat team. Not all academies or gyms under the Checkmat team are named "Fightzone", such as Impact MMA in Singapore.
