Charles John Harley (1862-1922) Councillor and Mayor of Nelson from 1915 to 1917. Educated at Nelson College (1872-1878). He was a barrister and solicitor by profession having been admitted to the Bar in 1883[1]. He died on 16 December 1922[2].

Children
Harley's son Howard was a marine engineer on the Laurentic when it was sunk in 1917 of the coast of Ireland. Howard survived and joined the Royal Navy Reserve. He served on a cruiser in World War 1[3][4].
Businesses
Harley was a partner in Adams and Harley and one of the owners of the Tonga Bay Granite Company[5].
Local government
Harley, a City Councillor since the 1890's, defeated William Lock by 1223 votes to 1065 to become Mayor of Nelson in 1915[6]. Despite being pressed by the Councillers in 1917 to stand for another term Harley declined[7]. William Snodgrass won the ensuing Mayoral election and became the next Mayor of Nelson.
Civic affairs
Harley was a Trustee of the Cawthorn Estate, a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters[8].
