Stella Vine

In 2005, British artist, Stella Vine, gave three paintings to the Imagine A World exhibition, organised by Amnesty International.^[1] In 2006, she donated^[2] a painting of John Peel and his wife to an auction for Terrence Higgins Trust.^[3] In 2007, she donated two works to the Spectrum Art auction:^[4][5] a painting raised over £10,000 for the charity^[6] In 2008, Vine created the painting Didier (2008),^[7] depicting Didier Drogba, for the charity Sport Relief.^[8]

History

In 2005, Vine gave three previously unseen paintings to the Imagine A World exhibition, organised by Amnesty International charity, highlighting violence against women.^[1] In 2006, she donated^[2] a painting depicting John Peel and his wife, to an auction for Terrence Higgins Trust.^[3] Vine said the painting was inspired by the couple on their wedding day which is included in his autobiography Margrave of the Marshes and that she had grown up listening to Peel's radio shows.^[9]

In June 2006, a number of Chelsea Arts Club artists including Sarah Lucas, David Shrigley, Sandra Blow, Sir Peter Blake and Stella Vine customised iconic Terry de Havilland platform wedged shoes for the group exhibition Fu*k Me! Shoes.^[10] Vine's pair were called Moira (2006) consisting of two identical painted portraits of Moira Shearer of The Red Shoes on the insole of each red shoe, with red satin ribbons tied at the back.^[11] On 26 June 2006, the shoes were auctioned for charity as part of burlesque-themed show rose money for three charities, Chelsea Arts Club Trust, Trinity Hospice and Artists' General Benevolent Institution, as part of burlesque-themed show.^[10] In 2008, Vine's hand-painted shoes were exhibited for a second time in Donald Smith's installation Colourspace for Shoes at the InterContinental hotel in London's Park Lane.^[12]

In 2007, Vine donated two works to the Spectrum Art auction: a painting Diana blue hairband,^[4] depicting Diana, Princess of Wales and a limited edition screenprint Melissa red jacket (2006),^[5] a self-portrait of Vine as a child. On 3 November 2007, the painting raised over £10,000 for the charity^[6] the winning bid was from a determined New York lawyer.^[13] It was reported in The Independent that Vine was so touched by the work Spectrum do that she spent a week learning about the service in Cornwall before producing two paintings for the cause.^[14]

Didier Drogba: Vine painted him in 2008 for the Sport Relief charity.

In 2008, Vine created the painting Didier (2008),^[7] depicting sports star Didier Drogba, for the charity Sport Relief. Vine also allowed them to create a limited edition print of Didier (2008) to help raise further funds for the charity.^[8] In April 2008, a drawing of author J. K. Rowling by Vine was auctioned for The Merlin Project charity^[15] who raise funds to build a Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre.^[16]

In July 2008, British pop star Adele paid £8,000 in a charity auction in aid of Keep A Child Alive^[17] for a commissioned painting by Stella Vine. Adele said she planned to ask Vine to paint a portrait of "my mum and me".^[18] The money raised helps children and their families with HIV and AIDS in Africa. In September 2008, Vine donated a small painting to the Macmillan De'Longhi Art Auction in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support charity.^[19] The auction lot was a commission painting by Vine where she offered to paint "a picture of yourself, your friends or family".^[20] The work sold for over £9,000. In November 2008, Vine donated a painting of Elizabeth Taylor to the Rumble In The Jumble charity event in East London hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow and Kids Company.^[21]
