Weymouth Bay

Weymouth Bay

Weymouth Bay is a sheltered bay on the south coast of England, in Dorset. It is protected from erosion by Chesil Beach and the Isle of Portland, and includes several beaches, notably Weymouth Beach, a gently curving arc of golden sand which stretches from the resort of Weymouth, along to the suburb of Greenhill, and the villages of Lodmoor and Preston, and terminates at Bowleaze Cove — a haven for watersports, windsurfing, scuba diving, jetskiing, surfing and swimming. This beauty has earned the bay the title of 'England's Bay of Naples'

The bay's waters are excellent for sailing — the best sailing waters in northern Europe, cite web | last = | first = | authorlink = | coauthors = | year = 2005 | url = http://www.weymouth.gov.uk/London2012/home.asp?svid=14 | title = 2012 Olympic Games sailing venue | format = | work = | publisher = Weymouth and Portland Borough Council | accessdate = 2006-11-12] , one reason why it is home to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy which will host sailing events for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Weymouth Bay is situated approximately half-way along the UNESCO Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, a convert|153|km|0|adj=on long stretch of coast, important for its varied geology and many unique landforms.
