Chachchon Ratanarak (Thai: ชัชชน รัตนรักษ์) is Chairman of Tonson Group and the only child of Krit Ratanarak who as Chairman of Bangkok Broadcasting and Television Company Channel 7 (Thailand) (BBTV) leads one of Thailand’s largest family business groups. Chachchon is also known as Ton or Tone.
The Ratanarak family have substantial holdings in a number of Thai-based companies including Bank of Ayudhya, Siam City Cement, Ayudhya Allianz CP, Ayudhya Insurance, Matching Studio, Grand Canal Land and Eastern Star Real Estate as well as holding a majority stake in BBTV. In 2011 Ratanarak group companies had a combined market value of over US$12bn.[1]
Chachchon graduated from London University in 1996. Described by a senior Goldman Sachs veteran as 'a natural entrepreneur', after leaving university Chachchon was asked to join Goldman Sachs but chose instead to work for his father.[2]
Chachchon founded fund management business Primavest in 2001 which at its height in 2007 had US$900 million in assets under management. Primavest was sold to Bank of Ayudhya Funds in 2009. Chachchon founded Tonson Group in 2006 and Tonson Property in 2007 which are the family’s investment arm and property development businesses. [3]
Chachchon has been a director of Siam City Cement since 2007. [4]
Born in 1972, he was educated in Thailand and in England from the age of 10 and he has a degree in Economics from London University. According to Forbes, the Ratanarak family’s holdings in the group businesses in 2011 were worth US$2.5 billion. The family is also one of Thailand’s major land owners.[5]
