"Brooksmith" is a short story written by Henry James in 1891. The story is also present in a compilation of 50 Great Short Stories by Milton Crane

Plot

In the story the narrator talks about a butler he had once run across, who is responsible for the preservation of the atmosphere in a retired diplomat's salon where various conversations take place. The butler, in time, with the changing circumstances goes through a phase when after he is left ill and in poverty.[1]
