Flaming Rapetime

Flaming Rapetime

Introduction

The Flaming Rapetime is a cocktail drink, conceived sometime towards the end of the 20th Century in the United Kingdom. Traditionally, it is made using a single measure of vodka, and a single measure of Kahlua, although several variants on the original drink have since appeared. The original drink is also shaken and served with specifically three ice cubes.

History

It is not clear where the name 'Flaming Rapetime' came from. One rumour is that it is named after a controversial cartoon series called 'Morning Glory', in which the word 'rapetime' frequently appears. Another suggestion is that it is an anagram of 'Familiar Gem Pent': one anecdote tells that Gemma Pent was a university student who (by accident), demanded kahlua and vodka.

The Flaming Rapetime is a bizarrely named cocktail, because, unlike many other 'flaming' cocktails, and contrary to what the name suggests, nowhere in the process does the maker have to light the drink. It is unclear therefore, why it is known as a Flaming Rapetime, although the name is now established in bars across the United Kingdom.

Variations

Since the late 90's, a few variations on the Flaming Rapetime have appeared. Firstly, it should be noted that the drink can be served as either a single or a double Flaming Rapetime. There is also a variant in which a half measure of whisky is added to the mix. In another interpretation (sometimes called the stinging rapetime), tequila is used in place of vodka.
