Global Health Council

The Global Health Council is the world's largest membership alliance dedicated to saving lives by improving health throughout the world. The Council’s mission is to ensure that all who strive for improvement and equity in global health have the information and resources they need to succeed.

A U.S.-based non-profit organization, it prioritizes urgent and ongoing global health issues to keep the public, policy-makers, domestic and international agencies and institutions, and the global health community informed. Its membership comprises health organizations, leaders, academics and practitioners from more than 100 countries.

History

The organization was established as the National Council for International Health in 1972 by an arm of the American Medical Association to identify priority world health problems and to report on them to the U.S. public, legislators, international and domestic government agencies, academic institutions and the global health community. The organization’s renaissance as the Global Health Council occurred when Dr. Nils Daulaire, the Council's sitting president and CEO, was recruited in 1998 to transform the then-NCIH into an organization that positions the issues of global health as priority for both policy-makers and public health practitioners.

Key Issues

The Council brings together the global actors in health around five key issues which have been identified as critical to improving health and promoting equity while reducing the burden of disease in all countries:
