Phillip Moysey

Phillip Moysey

Phillip Moysey (13 July 1912 - 7 March 1991) was an English artist who lived in Kent;a county whose people and landscapes provided the inspiration for his considerable output. In 1940 he met the Austrian expressionist artist Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) who called Moysey 'my first English pupil'. Kokoschka became his friend and mentor until the end of his life, during which Moysey assisted at Kokoshka's "School of Seeing". Like so many artists he was more concerned with producing work than promoting it. His pictures are mainly in the possession of friends and aquaintances but his work was featured in one of Christies' sales of 20th Century British artists and the exhibitions of his work were usually sold out. His work is virtually unknown in the main-stream art world but, as Kokoschka wrote (Observer Magazine), "He does splendid nature paintings that no modern art-dealer will buy,for nature is out of fashion. Perhaps he will be discovered when he is dead."
