The club was founded by the works manager Charles Crump [cite web |url=http://www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/articles/Railway%20Gazette/Edition1.htm | title=Railway Gazette 1st Ed.| publisher=Wolverhampton History & Heritage Society] and were noted as the strongest team in Wolverhampton until the formation of Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1877. FA Cup in 1879-80 and 1880-81, the latter seeing their best performance when they reached the quarter-finals, winning at Aston Villa en route, before losing to eventual runners-up Old Etonians. Dickie Baugh , who became Stafford Road's only ever international when he played in a 6-1 win against Ireland on13 March 1886 . The railway works that the football club were associated with closed in 1964.
